We are excited and look forward to meeting you and your child at their initial appointment. Dr. Clark's goal is to build a relationship with you and your child over the next several years in a comfortable environment that promotes good oral health care.

A child's first visit to the dentist should be enjoyable and positive. The more you and your child know about the first visit, the better you will feel. Children are not born with a fear of the dentist, but they can fear the unknown. It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear or anxiety, such as needle, shot, pull, drill or hurt. Pearland Pediatric Dentistry makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child. If you are anxious about the dentist, please don't convey this to your child. We want to help your child develop a positive opinion of the dentist. We want you to feel at ease from the moment your family arrives at our office.

Your child's initial visit to our office is aimed at being positive, educational, and fun. Dr. Clark invites parents to accompany their child through their initial visit with us so we can meet you and answer all of your questions. Our main goal is to make sure your child is comfortable and develops a healthy and positive relationship with us over the many years to come so he or she will want to develop good dental habits. We also want to develop a lasting relationship with you based on mutual trust and respect. As your child continues to see us, we do ask that once they are comfortable with us (this may take a few appointments with younger children) that you encourage them to experience their dental appointment on their own with you relaxing in the reception room. Dr. Clark will review their exam with you at the end of the appointment. This helps them to build their self-confidence for the future and allows them to focus all of their attention on us. As a board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Clark has found that younger children have a more positive experience when they are seen during the earlier part of the day. As they mature, then they do wonderful in the afternoon.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and our office recommend that your child visits the pediatric dentist by his/her 1st birthday. It is important that your child's newly-erupted teeth (erupting at 6-12 months of age) receive proper dental care and benefit from proper oral hygiene habits right from the beginning.

If you have any concerns about your child's dental health, please inform Dr. Clark and her team of these concerns. Our team is focused at making you and your child feel welcomed in our office.

At your child's first visit we will review their medical and dental history with you. When you share their medical history with us, be sure to provide complete, up-to-date information on their health. Inform us if they have experienced recent hospitalization or surgery, or if they have recently been ill. Also tell us the names, doses, and frequency of any medications they are taking — whether prescription or over-the-counter products — and the name and phone number of their pediatrician. At each recare (check-up) visit, please inform us of any changes in their health or medications. This information will help Dr. Clark and her team select the safest and most effective method of treatment for your child. Based on your child's age and dental development, they may have dental radiographs (also called x-rays) taken of their teeth at their first visit and recare visits. This will help Dr. Clark examine in between their teeth. We do follow the radiographic guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. One radiograph that your child may have done (typically around 7 years of age) is a panoramic radiograph that allows Dr. Clark to view the structure of the jaw, the position of developing permanent teeth, any pathology, and any missing or extra teeth.

To prepare for your child's visit, we have created an activity kit to familiarize your child with their teeth and help them look forward to their dental visit.
